Rings have been popular items of jewellery for over 6,000 years and for almost every culture, with three major exceptions. Surprisingly, there is no evidence of the Assyrians wearing rings, although we know they were fond of other jewellery accessories. It seems like the Celts of Ireland didn’t wear rings either. And the third major group are the Eskimos: at extremely low temperatures, even the slight pressure of the ring on the finger can impede blood circulation.

The ancient Romans had a particularly soft spot for rings, with a series of strict rules about how and when to wear them. Gold rings were undoubtedly in vogue, but it was in bad taste to wear them in a funeral. Sapphire rings were also very trendy, as it was thought sapphires had many mystical attributes, like being a poison antidote or preventing poverty and betrayal. The Romans were also the first ones to use a ring as a seal, thus giving it a practical usage besides its aesthetic function.
