Earrings were already popular 7,000 years ago in ancient Asia, mostly amongst the peoples of Assyria, China and India. In ancient Egypt high class people wore gold earrings set with sapphires, emeralds and rubies. In ancient Greece earrings were worn by prostitutes, whilst in ancient Rome they were mostly worn by slaves. However, wealthy Greek and Roman ladies used to wear pearl drop earrings to differentiate themselves from lower classes. In the 13th Century the Catholic Church forbade piercing the ears, and only thieves and outcasts continued to wear them. Amongst pirates an earring had many meanings: it could mean the wearer had crossed the equator, plundered a vessel, etc.

The prominence of ladies’ earrings has varied through the times, but in the early 1960’s they became definitely popular again. Since then, a pair of earrings has been, and continues to be, an indispensable piece of jewellery to embellish every outfit.
