It’s almost impossible to track when did the wearing of charms begin, as they were worn as a form of amulets with many mystical attributes. These early charms were often made of shells, animal bones, wood and rocks. The first known charm bracelets hark back to the Ancient Egypt. Many Pharaohs were buried with their gold and silver charm bracelets, simbolizing their wealth and power. These charms for bracelets have often had symbolic connotations. For instance, during the times of the Roman Empire, Christians would add a tiny fish-shaped charm to their bracelets to identify themselves to other Christians.

Their popularity went through the roof during the 19th Century, when the same Queen Victoria was a proud wearer of charm bracelets. Her taste inspired the rest of the European nobility, who would soon start to wear charm bracelets as well. Queen Victoria was also the first to incorporate to her bracelet charms that reminisced events of her life.
